by Richard Condit

Condit's book, The Chicago School of Architecture, provided the construction dates for nearly all buildings, and demolition date for those taken down by around 1963. My principal source for demolition that came later was Randall and Randall, the 1999 edition, which is very thorough about names, addresses, and dates, but only for buildings in the commercial center of the city. There are also a number of buildings for which Randall and Randall give a wide range of dates for demolition. My other valuable source to find out which buildings are still standing in 2013-2014, when I embarked on this project, was Google Street View, which allowed me to check what was standing at a specific address. I also in fact physically visited some sites and took photos, for example I stood at the Joseph Sears elementary school in Kenilworth to convince myself that it is not the same building covered in Condit's book. But of course Google nor a personal visit provides a demolition date, only the current status.

When Randall and Randall did not come through, I studied a wide variety of other sources, always online. One good general one is the Emporis building database, and of course Wikipedia was often useful. Readers can visit those sites and search for individual buildings easily; there is no need for me to list individual records. Chicago Tribune archives, Library of Congress photos, documents from the Ryerson library, and other sources often had information, but I always came across these following Google; some are listed below, but I have not created an exhaustive list of other web sites where I found some answers I needed. I have, though, included other books I consulted for information.
